About the Initiative
Disclosure
This page sets out how the Initiative relates to arabianscript.com, the business interests of its founder, and the rules that keep those interests apart from the Initiative's work.
The Initiative and arabianscript.com
The platform offers a combined search of manuscript records from open sources, including Fihrist, Qalamos, HMML and IIIF sources, and a text tool that works on texts from the OpenITI project and gives the location of every quotation in its source.
The Initiative refers to the platform because it puts some of the Initiative's principles into practice, such as the link back to the source and linking manuscript images to their holding institutions. It does so only together with a disclosure of the operator, it does not promote the platform, and it never presents it as one of its own projects.
As of September 2026, the text tool uses a cloud-hosted language model, so the text of each question is sent to a model provider in the United States.
A relationship not yet defined
Open The relationship between the Initiative and the company operating the platform has not yet been defined.
It will be defined once the licensing questions with the rights holders of the sources the platform uses have been clarified. If it is governed by a contract, the key terms will be published on this page.
Until then, no paid service is offered in the platform's text tool.
Licence of the texts
The texts the text tool works on come from the OpenITI project and are published under the CC BY-NC-SA 4.0 licence. This licence requires attribution, limits use to non-commercial purposes and requires derivative works to be shared under the same licence.
For this reason these texts are not tied to any paid service unless otherwise agreed with the rights holders.
Open components
The open components are meant to belong to the Initiative, not to any of its founder's companies. They are the Ethics Charter for AI and Arabic and Islamic Heritage, the Citation Fidelity Standard once it is issued, and the methodology on which tests and measurements are based.
These components will be published under open licences (texts under CC BY 4.0, code under the Apache License 2.0). The founder's companies, including the company operating the platform, will use them on the same terms as anyone else.
Planned The Charter, the Standard and the methodology are in preparation, and no licence has been chosen yet.
